Elf Fantasy Fair - more pictures...

I have now returned from the most wonderful weekend in the Netherlands.

I met so many like minded people and had so much fun, I am diffidently going again.

I saw so many things that one blog post wont do it, so I'm just going to show you some of the amazing costumes today, and I'll be writing a bit about the shopping at the fair another day.

Not everyone was in costume, so if you don't like to dress up, it's still really fun to go and look at everyone else. But I really felt like I fitted in better when I wore my costumes.

Here's some of my favourites this year.

Family of vampires. Everyone was very friendly and didn't mind having their photo taken.

The fair wasn't just for girls who likes fairies.
There was a lot of staged fights and in general I think there was a lot to look at for the boys as well.

It was fun to see how really scary costumes like these, where mixed up with pretty Barbie like fairies.

Unicorn princess.

The fair was very family orientated as well.

There where lots of children and many activities for them as well.

It was no problem getting around with a pram, so many people even brought infants.
Lots of people also came in wheelchairs and had no problems getting around.

It was a 7hour drive here from Denmark, but I think it was worth the long drive.

The fair is really big, and we where really glad, we went both days, because we wouldn't have seen everything otherwise.

There was also a lot for science fiction fans. Here my Mum is petting a predator.

Lots of people brought their dogs as well.
You can't see the dog, but this fairy is actually holding her little dog.

I changed my costume Sunday. I went as a sorceress and wore my dragon tooth I made from polymerclay.

I really recommend everyone to go. I never had so much fun before!
I think I will have a booth at some point. Not sure if it will be next year or the year after though.

Elf Fantasy Fair 2011

This weekend I'm attending the Elf Fantasy Fair in Arcen, Netherlands together with my Mum.

For those of you who doesn't know the fair; CLICK HERE!

The fair is for fantasy enthusiast and features alot of great bands, fantasy booths, but best of all almost everyone attending is in costume.

So today I have talked with fairies, vampires, trolls, beasts of all sorts, steampunkers, goths, queens, princess and many other characters.

We arrived very late yesterday to a wonderful hotel.

This morning we had breakfast and spend a couple of hours on doing our make up and putting on our costumes.

Poison Ivy - Batman Villain....

I've made a piece for a contest on our danish jewelry forum.

The topic this month was superheroes / villains and I choose Poison Ivy from Batman.

She is obsessed with plants and all her crimes are related to the protection of such.
I think she's one of the coolest characters in batman.

Re- use old pieces...

Sometimes a piece just wont get sold. It just sits in the shop, collecting more and more dust.

If this happens I like to take a look at the piece again.

Perhaps it's just the pictures that need fixing.

I had this problem with my forest bracelet;

Although the picture is clear enough, the bacground doesn't match the forest look.

So I re-shot it.

Now it looks like this;

Sometimes a new picture isn't enough. I had made this moon set a year ago, and it never got a lot of views or much interest. So I decided to re-do the pieces.

Plus it's a great exercise for a creativity boost.

I love this movie!!

Not so much for the story, I'm not certain it's actually historically correct, but for the costumes and beautiful colours.

I can watch it again and again and feel inspired.

I've long wanted to make a piece inspired by the movie, and this weekend I did.

Proud of myself...

I'm actually pretty proud of my newest piece. I wanted to use a briolet turned upside down, and I wanted the back of the piece, to be just as interesting as the front. With those two criteria for the design in mind, I created my newest design: Stormy Weather.

It took a lot of time to finish and get it just right, but I think it was worth it...

I will try to pay more attention to the back in my next pieces as well. I think it adds a nice finish.

I may turn this one into a tutorial. I'm testing it on JL, so if you want me to do it, please go VOTE!
I also put it up for sale in my Danish webshop, I'm currently not selling finished jewelry on any international sites, but I am working on a new artfire shop...

Jewelry making tip: Chains!

I'm a student, so I don't always have a lot of money to spend on jewelry supplies, so whenever I can find some way of spending a little less money on materials, I'm a happy girl (And so is my husband)

One thing I hate spending money on, is chain. It's a big part of the piece, but I don't get to have a lot of fun with it. It's mostly just practical. But I was out shopping the other day at my local flower shop, and saw they had a bunch of gorgeous ribbons, and some of it was pretty cheap. So I took home a small selection and started playing with it, and I have to tell you I'm in love!!

Not only is it less expensive than metal chain (especially silver) but it also adds colour and texture to your piece.

Here's the latest piece I did with ribbon instead of chain. I love this leaf ribbon - it's perfect for my fairy pieces. I use the same method for attaching the ribbon as I do for leather cord. You can find my tutorial here!

So next time your out shopping keep an eye out for ribbons. I've found them in flower shops, grocery stores, craft stores and at fabric shops. I also tend to look for them whenever I'm travelling, it's a great souvenir and it doesn't take up much space in the suitcase.

Dragon Tooth and Cyclops Eye

I've had my 10 year old cousin staying for a week.

He's really into real life role-playing, so we have been making jewellery for his costumes.

I dug into my polymerclay, and we made dragon tooths and cyclops eyes.

Here's what came out of it, they may look at bit scary and bloody, cause we had just slayed the beast' ;-)

And here's my little cousins set - I think he's got talent...

I think they turned out so well, that I will be putting them up for sale....

A Jewel for Lotus...

Remember I was doing a swap for two of Lotus' cool dolls???

Well I finished one of the jewelry pieces for her.
She wanted a necklace with rose quartz and moonstone.
I've always thought moonstones where very elven like, they look like something Arven from the Lord of the Rings would have worn.

So I decided to make the piece elven style, and here it is;

Going to the "Elf Fantasy Fair 2011"

WUHU!!! I'm so excited because me and my Mum, decided to go to the fantasy fair in the Netherlands.

We'll just be attending for the fun of of it, and to see if we might like to try having a booth next year.

But best part of it is, that this means new costumes!!! And we've decided to go as a steampunk/Goth fairies.

So instead of jewelry I've been making altered shoes for my costume.

I painted the shoes black with acrylic paint and added the purple laces. The insects where toys but I painted them with copper coloured acrylic paints and glued them on with my glue gun. However it seems they may fall of, so I think I'll need some stronger glue.

My Mum then designed mascot dolls we will put on the shoulders for our costumes.

And here's the great thing about the blog world. Lotus a great doll maker, saw the post and offered to make us the doll in return of some of my jewelry, and this was a great trade so I screamed YES!! as fast as I could...

So now I'll be working on the jewelry for Lotus. We've agreed upon a pendant consisting of moonstone and rose quarts, and a hair pin.

Fairy Pendant - Wedding style

My latest creation: "Fairy Pendant - Wedding style". I imagine this could be something a fairy bride would wear.

I used pink moonstone, which can be difficult to find at a reasonable price, but my bead-pusher on Ebay, helped me out :-)

As always it was Vannespan who could supply me with the lovely beads...

Also I recently found a bead vendor on Etsy, which I'm very happy with. I've had a hard time finding very tiny labradorites faceted. But this vendor has the most beautiful 3-5mm micro-faceted beads. They are a bit pricey, but worth every penny. I haven't used any before but I felt this piece was worth the extravagance...

I am very active on varies jewellery making forums on the net. I love the input and friendship I have with other jewellery artist. And then there's the challenges and competitions, which always is a great way to get new inspiration.

Lately I've anticipated in two bead swaps. Each of us sends out at least 10 beads, and receive 10 new beads from someone else. It's a lot of fun, and the new beads often give me lots of inspiration...

I had a challenge... I was to make a piece of jewelry inspiered by the 1960's.

I decided that my inspiration should be the late 60's hippi's, and this is what came out of it...

I incorporated a small peace sign in the middle of the wire work. Stones used are sunstone, ameethyst, garnet and citrine.

This pendant was made for a fairytale princess. I believe all girls and women have a princess inside of them who just wants to look beautiful and stunning. I have been a way for a while. Me and my husband bought our very first house, and with all the moving and renovating the house, I just haven't had time for anything jewellery related. But now I'm back for good with my very own jewellery studio!
Keep an eye on the blog, there will be "give-aways" and new tutorials in near future!
But for now I'll show you the new house and my new studie...

Book review - Altered Curiosities

I am a part of the SATEAM blog carnival, and this month the topic is book reviews!

I decided to take on Jane Wynns - Altered Curiosities, the newest member in my book collection.

At first glances you might not think it has anything to with jewellery, from the looks of the scary doll head on the cover, but it does.

The book is about using found objects, preferably old broken toys, in making art. She teaches you how to saw plastic and put it back together with metal.

One of my favourite projects, is the deer necklace. I wont give too much away but sawing of a platic toy deers head is involved :-)

The style is sort of Tim Burton meets the mean boy from Toy Story one. A fabulously cool meeting if you ask me.

So if you are wanting to try out mixed media, and love the sort of weird scary style this is the book for you. Great pictures and great tutorials, written in a delightful heartfelt tone.

Christmas is Nearing

I always have a signature Christmas pendant in my stock for the holidays. And this year is no different. I get inspired by all the wonderful traditions Christmas holds.

Here's the last couple of years' holiday pendants


My first holiday pendant from 2 years ago, was this big red quarts, wire wrapped and adorned with pink tourmaline beads. I chose the pink to go a long with the red, so that it would fit the holiday theme, but also be wearable outside of the season. The inspiration for this, was the beautiful Christmas balls.

Last year I made this more subtle pendant. I used a white cherry quarts, red garnets and a brown tourmaline. This one was inspired by the Danish holiday dish, "Æbleskiver". It's kinda like fritters, it's fried bread with jam and sugar. We eat a lot of it here in Denmark during the holidays.

So this year I wanted to go all out on the Christmas theme, and make something in red and green. So I got this gorgeous moss agate bead pendant, and some lovely red garnets, green tourmalines + apatite and wrapped it all up in this;

The inspiration for this piece was the traditional Danish Christmas tree. Which almost always is dominated by red and green. Unfortunately this pendant will not be up for sale in my etsy store. But it is available on Shelter Flair a long with other of my designs.

Tropical Dreams

The FamiLee Jewels consists of 3 generations of jewelry artist, all working together in making a wonderful enchanting shop. Most of the jewelry is Steam Punk inspiered. I love steampunk because the idea of someones rejects, becoming someone elses treasures, appeals so much to me. The Family Jewels use many different techniques in their jewelry, wire wrapping, etching, cold connections and even chainmaille.

What’s your favourite thing about making jewelry?

I love letting my imagination run free, collecting unusual bits and pieces from garage sales, salvage yards and friends junk drawers, and using them in unexpected ways.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting to make jewelry?

Practice, practice, practice. Repetition makes things easier and the easier it becomes the more you can put your own ideas into your creations.

How much time do you spend on making jewelry pr month?

That took some calculating. Every chance I get but if you need a number 2-3 hours a day on the days I work and 4-8 hours a day on my days off equals about 150 hours a month. of course that includes marketing and selling but it's part of the package.

This is one of my favorite pieces in your shop, so please tell me a little about it

Salvage Hardware Dragonfly Necklace

The actual piece only takes about 90 minutes to make. There is however a lot of time that goes into finding the various components.

What materials did you use, and why did you use them?

Antique cabinet hardware, in this case the pull from an old cabinet door. I love the intricate detail in these old pieces and the lasting quality of the work. I use brass components, wire, findings and antiqued brass chain that complement the hardware.

Did you plan out the design, make a sketch or did it just come to you?

Most of my designs come from playing with the bits and bieces of hardware that are in the studio. I lay them together with components in likely combinations until I like the way it looks, then start the attachment process.

What techniques where used to create the piece?

All of my pieces are assembled with cold connections. In this case I used wire wrapping to attach the dragonfly to the frame, and to make the multichain necklace that it hangs on.

First Time Etching

I've been wanting to try a new technique for some time now. The idea is to use an acid that will etch copper, but leave places to be protected from the acid and then when finished you will have the imprint on your metal.

Of cause I messed it up, but I wanted to show you my results anyways...

First mistake - used way too thin sheet metal (26ga)

Got my circle cut out now...

Cleaned the metal from any grease or other stuff...

Drew my little fairy picture...

Final product got way too etched cause I forgot to put resistance on the back...

Now oxidised...


Couldn't bare not to use it, so made this little piece out of it. Wont put it up for sale though, this is just for me.

What is Copper??

People often ask me why I use copper in my jewelry and not silver. The answer is simple, I can't afford silver and I love the golden colour of the copper. Copper has many of the same abilities as Silver and Gold. It is a pure natural product, that can be found in nature. You cannot get allergies from wearing copper, as copper contains non of the toxic metals such as nickel. All great reasons why I love to use copper in my jewelry.

The reason why copper is not considered to be a precious metal, is because it oxidises very quickly in the air. That's why most copper jewelry is oxidized, this means it wont change it's colour, since it already has been oxidized. This also means no polishing :-) Almost all of my copper pieces has been oxidized.

I am allergic to copper! - No probably not... When people think they are allergic to copper, it's often because their skin reacts with the copper, leaving a dark green colour on their skin. The same thing happens with silver, only that the marks are black. But the marks are in no way dangerous, but just annoying. Some people reacts stronger to this then others. This is do to the substance of chemicals in their sweat. If you have this problem, a small coat of clear nail polish on the places that touches your skin, can prevent this from happening.

I love copper so much, that I even chose to make our wedding rings in copper.

Copper is actually known to ease the pain caused by gout in the hands. So if you have trouble with pain in your hands during the cold winter months, a copper bracelet, might help you.

Copper is not as rare as silver and gold, and this leaves the material coasts to be much lover, and of cause this benefits you when buying jewelry because we are able to make beautiful pieces, but at a much lower coast, then if we used gold or silver.
Remember that when you buy a copper piece, you know that there are no hidden toxics, it's a pure product that is safe for you to wear.

New tutorial - Round N' Round Earrings

I finally finished the tutorial, and it's going to be for my crazy spiral earring project "Round N' Round earrings".

In this lesson I will teach you how to make a pair of Round N’ Round earrings. We will go through such basic techniques as how to make spirals and how to form a loop, and these techniques will be used in making the fun Round N Round earring design. I do recommend that you have some wire experience before hand, but this is not a difficult project, and should be mastered by beginners as well as intermediates.

Playing With my Hammer

I just recently got a new texture hammer, and today I tried it on some different small projects.

This necklace has a small citrine drop, dangling from it. I like the simplicity of this pendant, although it's not my usual style.

Again a more simple everyday look then my normal

pieces.

See how different the texture is. I think these kinda look like crumbled up paper.

These have been donated for charity, supporting the fight against breast cancer. It's only available in Denmark, but you can check it out HERE

Fairy Princess Necklace

Inspiration: When a fairy girl fancies a fairy boy, she will give him her birth flower. All fairies has a birth flower, that is sort of their guardian angel. So when a fairy boy receives a flower, he knows that someone likes him. If he likes the fairy girl back, he will also give her his birth flower, and then a wedding normally fallows quickly along after.

Recycling

We are doing a blog carnival on the always wonderful SATEAM. This means that we are all writing about the same topic, and this month the topic is; RECYCLING

Great theme for me as I do have some fun recycling projects to show you.

Soda can before

I had this idea, that I wanted recycle soda cans, and use them in my jewelry. The idea sprung from a friend who just can't live without her daily doses of coca cola, and as a fun present I wanted to make her coke earrings :-)

Cut out soda can earrings

So I cleaned out the cans and cut out circle discs, with my disc cutter. Afterwards I filed the edges so they wouldn't be sharp.

Finished earrings

Then I punched holes in the circles, and used little star rivets to cover the holes. I haven't gotten around to make any more, but the plan is to have some available in my shop soon, so keep an eye out.

Another recycling project is my steampunk pieces. I use old watch parts, buttons, nails and whatever fun thing I come across.

Denmark - My Country

This is a more personal post, as I wanted to tell you all a little bit about my country, Denmark. We are mostly known for the writer HC Andersen, the little mermaid and our capital city Copenhagen. But I live on an island called Als, in the southern part of Denmark, almost at the border to Germany. We are a constitutional monarchy, meaning we have a Queen or sometimes a King, that is the head of our country, but she/he does not have any powers politically. So if you saw "The prince and me" you might have gotten the wrong idea about how our country works. We have a premier minister, and he's selected at elections just like the American president. So Denmark is a democracy. (Hated that movie by the way, NOTHING was right about how Denmark was displayed.)

The nature around Denmark is very beautiful. The weather is mild with snow in winter, sunny in the summer and rainy in the fall. We don't have any dangerous animals, no volcanoes, earth quakes or tsunamis. In general we are pretty well of.

We are a Lutheran Christian country, but the general public doesn't go to church except for holidays, weddings and christenings. In the olden days we believed in the Norse mythologies, and we still feel very connected with the old tales of Thor, Odin and Freja. I am often inspired by Norse mythology in my jewelry making. As for my own believes, I am like most of the general Danish population. I was married in a church, but I don't tend church on a regular basis. I like the ideas behind Christianity, but I wouldn't say I'm a firm believer in god, we are just not brought up to it here in Denmark.

This is not a regular Danish wedding dress. We decided to make our wedding themed, as a fairytale wedding. So all of our guest has to come dressed up as a fairytale character. Normal wedding dresses in Denmark are white and our customs are very similar to the Americans.

We are a very small country with only about 5.5 million citizens in total. In comparison, New York City is about three times as big, as the whole Kingdom of Denmark. So you could pretty much drive from one end to the other in about 10 hours.

		Well I guess I could tell you a lot more, but this was just a small introduction to where I'm from.

Where To Buy Materials?

I always gets asked where I buy my supplies for jewelry making. I know some jewelry artist wont give out their supply source, since then everyone will start to copy them. I however make all the parts for my jewelry myself, and don't feel threaten by competition. Instead I see it like this; If I have a great supply store, I would want him/her to do good, so that the shop keeps existing. Also if a supplier has given me a great service, why not tell people about it, and give him/her the possibility to make more sales? Also I see my fellow jewelry artists as colleagues, not as competition I need to beat. So with no further ado, here's a list of my favourite supply shops!

Wire I buy pre-oxidized. I do this, because some stones don't take well to the chemicals used in oxidation. Also my supplier uses the chemicals much more productive, then I can at home, therefore less chemicals gets wasted, and that is better for the environment. So my sire I purchase from JustWire on Etsy.

Dave that runs the shop is very nice, and always gives a perfect costumer service. If you need a special order, he's always fast to respond and ships your order very fast. He's also one of the only suppliers I have found that carriages copper bezel wire.

Beads I tend to buy on Ebay. Over the years I've purchased beads from lots of different Ebay shops. Some people are scared of buying beads on Ebay, because they worry about the quality. I have never had any problems, and most sellers on Ebay are very nice and service minded. Here's some of my favourites.

Big beads I normally purchase from KylinMore on Ebay,He has a huge selection of beads in all sizes, but I find that his selection of nugget beads and small crystal rondelles are the best. You can both bid and "buy it now" on all of his beads. He has a great discount on shipping if you buy multiple items, so I always try to summon up a big order before submitting my order.

Tiny briolettes are always hard to find, especially if you want them to be natural stone. But Vannesspan on Ebay, has some great ones, in really good quality and at fair prices.

The beads come packed in very nice foam boxes. Very very safe packaging. And costumer service is really great at this shop!

Findings such as chain, O'rings and pins, I buy at YadanaBeads on Ebay. I find the quality is great, shipping fast and prices fair. They also have a huge selection and great multiple shipping discounts.

Briolettes on this piece are from Vannesspan, wire from JustWire and chain from YadanaBeads.

I own an insane amount of jewelry making books. And then I thought, why not share my absolute favourite top 5, with you... I will start with number 5, and end with my all time favourite :-)

5. The Art of Polymer Clay Millefiori Techniques by Donna Kato

Techniques: Polymer clay bead making

The best polymer clay book ever written in my opinion. This is one thick book, and it goes through everything you need to know about polymer clay. Very well written instructions plus a pretty long introduction to the history behind polymer clay. A most have book for anyone making polymer clay.

4. Silver Threads by Jeanne Rhodes-Moen

Techniques: Soldering - Filigree

This is actually the book that got me started making jewelry. I did it all backwards and started soldering, before I even knew what a head pin was. Jeanne's book really makes it easy to begin soldering, and starts with easy projects and end up with very detailed intermediate pieces. All pieces are filigree styled and simply just gorgeous. A great book for everyone intrested in learning how to solder.

3. Steampunk Style Jewelry by Jean Campbell

Techniques: Cold connections

This is a selection of the very best steampunk artist. Great fun projects are shown with pictures. But what is even better, is that all through the book are small chapters on the origin of steampunk. So not only do you learn how to make jewelry, but you also get some steampunk history. And to top it of, it's all done with great pictures and a nice layout.

2. Stamped Metal Jewelry by Lisa Niven Kelly

Techniques: Letter and design stamping on metal sheet

Very clear pictured instructions and a wonderful fun and joyful layout. Not only do you get the book, but with it is a DVD, where Lisa shows the techniques in several videos. This is one of my most recent purchases and I couldn't be happier.

1.Enchanted Adornments by Cynthia Thornton

Techniques: Metal clay, polymer clay, wire wrapping, shrink plastic, mixed media and resin

This is my all time favourite jewelry making book. Cynthia has a story to all the pieces in the book, I wont reveal too much but I promise it's very magical and fairytale like. Plus the main character is a jewelry designer (Can it be more relatable??) Techniques are only written, but this book introduces you to a lot of different techniques, and me being a technique junky, this is perfect. So this is jewelry making combined with a fairytale short story. And all the pieces are simply gorgeous. I see it as an introduction to a lot of different techniques, you will need more info on the techniques, but this is a great way of finding out what you want to try next. Best buy I ever made.

Taking Jewelry Photos - How to choose the background

In most photo lessons, on how to take good pictures of your jewelry, you are almost always told to use a simple, one colour background, in order to not distract the eye from your jewelry. It's not that I disagree with this, but I do think you are in danger of making your web shop look a little bit boring. I always admired the shops, who has busy backgrounds, but still make it work. I've never really figured out how to use props in a good way, though I know some shops do this very successfully. However, I do believe I've figured out some good points on how to use patterned backgrounds. And now I will try to give these points to you :-)

I always use craft paper for my backgrounds. I tend to look for papers which doesn't have any contrasting colours, and where the pattern isn't too obvious. I've often fallen for very advanced papers, which has lots of gorgeous detailing, but the simple patterns does work better. I buy the craft papers at stores that carriages supplies for scrap booking. They often have a huge selection of gorgeous papers. Also always choose papers which has a mat finish. You don't want the paper to shine back at the camera.

I always use natural lighting in my photos. I know you can buy expensive light boxes, but I really don't like the unnatural results they give. I want my pictures to be as true to the real life experience as possible. In the picture above, you can see how I place my piece on top of the craft paper, as close to the window as possible. Really not a very fancy set-up, but I find that it works.

Having a good camera is very important, but always remember to use the macro setting on your camera. Normally it's pictured as a flower. This will set the focus on detailing, and that is just what where looking for, when taking photos of jewelry.

The picture I choose for the web shop - a good all year around background

Next step is to choose the right background for the right piece of jewelry. I try to consider what I want my message to be. Is the piece a seasonal piece? Do I have a certain story I want the piece to express? Do I want to put emphasize on the colour of the piece? Or do I want to tone down the colour of piece?

My inspiration behind the green heart above was this: New fallen snow on moss, glitters with the sparkles of fairy dust. Small snow flakes are encapsulated to this beautiful moss agate, and lets you feel the fresh air, when the first snow has fallen, all year round.

Now this piece really calls out for being seasonal - more particularly a Christmas piece. But I made the piece in July, not the right season for marketing a Christmas piece. Here's different ideas for using the background of the picture, to change the season of the piece.

Autumn focusing on the brown colours.

For autumn I could use this brown background with leaves. This put emphasize on the brown colour of the metal, and makes you think of fallen leaves.

Spring/summer emphasize on romance

For spring or summer I would probably choose a light and romantic background. Preferably one that put emphasizes on the heart shape and romantic swirls decorating the pendant.

Christmas seasonal background

And to really make the piece stand out as a Christmas seasonal piece, I would choose a Christmas background like this one. If you want to use a background with clear patterns, choose one where the pattern is big, then it wont be as busy.

Emphasize on colour

To put emphasize on colour, I would choose a background with the same colour that I want to emphasize. This will make the heart look more green, then it really is.

And to do the final touch it's not enough to just post your pictures as they came out to be. All photos no matter how good, should undergo a little photo editing, to make it look more professional. I want go into all the details on how to use photo editing here, but just show you a before and after picture.

Tutorial - Warm/Cool Colours in Jewelry

When we make jewellery, having a good sense of colour is very important. Being the daughter of an artist, I have been taught about the colour circle ever since I was a kid. I’ve adapted the lessons used by painters, to fit our needs as jewellery makers, giving some good points on how to use colours in our jewelry. In this tutorial I will focus on how to use cold/warm colours.

First I need to explain the basics. Through out time there has been many ways of understanding colours, but the most known and used is Newton’s colour circle which he invented in 1666. My lesson will use his ideas, just applied on beads and metals.

The circle is built on 3 primary colours, which cannot be created with any other colours: The primary colours are yellow, blue and red.

The secondary colours are the ones which can be created by mixing the 3 primary colours:

red+yellow = orange,

red+blue = violet,

yellow+blue = green

Finally; the tertiary colours can be created by mixing the secondary colours.

Of cause we can't mix colours when we are using beads, but it is important to understand the basis of the colours in order to understand the difference between warm/cold colours. If you are finding this all confusing try to play with some watercolour, mixing the colours, and seeing the change with your own eyes.

Warm / Cool colours

The colour circle can also be divided into two half’s; a warm and a cold one.

The colours temperature determines how the colours react to each other. In general a hot colour goes with another hot colour and the same with the cold. The colours can be divided into families. All families has both warm and cool variations. This means that an orange colour can actually both be a hot and a cold colour.This is important when choosing colours for different metals.

Here's examples of the same colour beads, but in different temperatures. Notice how the warm colours all carries more yellow then blue, and the cool colours carries more blue. If you have doubt about whether your bead is warm or cool coloured, try using one of the painters circles and check your bead on it. Here's an online colour wheel, that works really well. Try holding up your bead and find the colour closest to it. See where it lands on the wheel to

see if it's a cool or a warm colour.

Here's when it gets hard, but also important for jewelry making. Metal colours are warm and cool as well. And as we just found out, warm colours goes best with other warm colours, and the same goes for the cool colours.

Silver: Cold colour

Gold/Brass: Hot colour

Bronze/Copper: Hot-cold colour (This means it belongs to the warm family, like gold, but copper has more blue in it, and therefore it is a warm colour going towards the cool colours)

So what on earth does all this mean??

When you are choosing an orange colour for your silver piece, try to keep in mind if the orange is a cold or a hot orange, for a silver piece you should choose an orange that is almost yellow. Copper is a very easy metal to choose colours for, because it’s both a warm and cool colour almost all colours will fit copper.

Inspiring Artist - Marianne Mathiasen

People often ask me, where I get my inspiration, and as other artist I get it from everything beautiful I see. It can be nature, a poem or a piece of beautiful fabric. But I also find great inspiration in fellow artist, not just other jewelry artist but also sculptures, painters and florists. So to honor all of those talented people, who inspires me, I've decided to write about them ever ones so often here on the blog, so that I can share the beauti with all of you.

My first inspirational article will be about the women who gave birth to me, my wonderful talented mother; Marianne Mathiasen. Perhaps better known as the creator of Nidlongdir and by her fairy name Ranunkel.

(My mother often use old children photos of me and my brother in her paintings, so if some characters look familiar, that is why. This picture of the fairy Ebbe, is based on my brother)

My mother is a painter. I can't remember her not drawing either with pencils, water colour or now acrylic and oil paints.She made my childhood into one big fairytale, always telling me stories and encouraging me to go look for fairies and trolls in the woods. I have many fund memories of her and I painting together, and even now, we have joint workspaces, so that I can sit and create jewelry while she sits and paints.

(Mum supports my jewelry making, and sometimes use the jewelry in her own art. The earrings and bracelet in this shopping guide are made by me)

She has a background as a skilled cartoon animator from The Danish School of Animation. And has taken several advanced classes at art colleges around the world. In my childhood she mostly drew paper dolls, and I have played with many of the pretty dolls.

How I Like to Play With Texture

I just recently started working with texture, as I just started doing metal work. This means sawing, cutting and stamping metal jewelry.

Here's some examples of pieces where I did different textures

This piece was severely punished with different hammers, to give it a rough used metal look. I wanted it to look like a piece of old metal scram.

In these moons I used a star metal stamp to create the texture. From afar it just looks like normal ballpen hammer marks, but when you get close you see all the small stars.

In this piece I used a ballpen hammer and metal stamps. The stamps was used to create a border line around my letters.

Here's a great example of how different the same style of bracelet can be with and without texture added to the metal. On the first picture the links have been hammered, with a texture hammer. Second photo I left the links smooth.

Texture is fun to work with, and I've just started playing with all of the possibilities.

Newest member of the Danagonian jewelry family!

The elven hunters creates their arrows from fine cut amethyst. This gives the animal a peaceful and painless death. After they have eaten the animal, the elven saves the bones, and when the animal has been killed with an amethyst arrow, they have the ability to resurrect the animal, and bring it back to life.

I used pure oxidized copper and genuine natural amethyst beads. Pendant measures 5X2cm, chain measures 50cm, clasp is handmade. This will be an OOAK item, I don't think I can redo this one.

I love working on large stone pendants. It's always fun to make up a new wire wrap, to fit the stone.

My inspiration: Fairies doesn't have religions like us humans, but they do carry certain symbols for protection and prosper. This is one of them, I can't write it's name with our alphabet, so I've decided to just call it "The fairy cross".

Crescent Moon

You might recall something similar to this in my sketchbook, and this is where I got the inspiration. However as you may see, sketches sometimes vary a lot from the finished product. I had to simplify the design, because it would end up being a bit too big if I had to fit in all the swirls, but I think I will revisit the sketch again soon.

A Browse Through My Sketchbook

I just got a new sketchbook yesterday, and I've already filled out some of the pages, with ideas for new fantasy jewelry designs. I wanted to share some of these sketches with you.

A crescent moon design. I love moons, and I've already made other moon designs, but they've all lacked swirls, so this one is going to get lots and lots of swirls.

This reminds me, if of the story about how the moon came to be. There is an old story among the fairies, that the moon used to be a fairy princess. She fell in love with a human prince. But it is illegal for fairies to be seen by humans, thus she could not help herself, and one day revealed herself to him. But he was not a good hearted prince and did not want the fairy princess. Her heart broke, and to punish herself for her stupid mistake, she flew up on the sky, and only came out when the sun went down. There she glowed every night, to give guidance to everyone on earth. The fairy princess' father mourned his daughter and decided that little lights where to be put up on the sky every night, to keep his daughter company, and so it has been ever since.

I am also working on a series of pieces inspired by the 4 elements earth, fire, water and air. Here are some ideas for earth and water designs.

New ideas for old religious symbols. Here I have sketched out ideas for a cross and the hammer of Thor, from old Norse mythology.

I have been planning to do this, for a very long time, however I've never really gotten around to it. But from now on, I will try to blog about my life, but mostly about my jewelry making.

Please bare with my spelling, english is my secound language :-)

My jewelry adventure started about two years ago. I had just finished school and had to decide, what I wanted to do with my life. I was very inconsistent and tried out all sorts of things. First I studied business, but that was way to borrowing for me, I ended up sitting and drawing during all of my lectures. Then I decided I wanted to become a multimedia designer. I actually enjoyed this profession, but during my studies I also discovered jewelry making, and ended up spending all of my time on that, instead of studying. So I dropped out after a year and started teaching jewelry classes. This was heaven. I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted to teach.
So now I am studying to become a school teacher in my native language, Danish, arts and crafts and history. I love spending time with the children, and I still have time to teach jewelry classes, it's the perfect combo.
